Follow our straightforward guide to find out all you need to know ahead of renewing your Maltese passport or applying for your first one.

Where and How

All Maltese passport renewals are handled by Identita at the Passport Office in Marsa, Malta, or at the Passport Office in Victoria, Gozo. Have a look at their opening hours here to avoid disappointment.

You can download and fill in the necessary forms needed in advance from their website. To submit the application and to collect your passport, you will need to go to their office in person, since each application or renewal requires your biometric information - facial image, signature, and fingerprints.

You can book an appointment through their online portal, however, walk-ins are also possible, although this may result in a longer waiting time.

Expired Passport

Your passport is valid for 10 years and once it expires you’ll need to apply for a new one. You can download Form A and fill in sections 1, 2, 5 & 9. As part of the renewal process, you’ll also need to take your original and valid ID card with you, together with your expired passport.

Between September and March, your new passport will be ready for collection after 4 working days and will cost you €70.

Between April and August, your new passport will also be ready for collection after 4 working days but will cost you €80.

If you’ll need your new passport urgently, the process can be completed within 4 hours but will cost you €140.

First-Time Adult Applicant

If you’re a Maltese national over the age of 18 and are applying for your first Maltese passport, you will need to download Form A and fill in sections 1, 2, 7 & 9. As part of the application process, you’ll also need to take your original and valid ID card with you.

If Maltese citizenship was acquired, the original citizenship certificate must be presented together with a copy.

Between September and March, your new passport will be ready for collection after 4 working days and will cost you €70.

Between April and August, your new passport will also be ready for collection after 4 working days but will cost you €80.

If you’ll need your new passport urgently, the process can be completed within 4 hours but will cost you €140.

Lost or Stolen Passport

If your Maltese passport has been lost or stolen, you will need to download Form A and fill in sections 1, 2, 5, 7 & 9.

As part of the application process, you’ll also need to take your original and valid ID card with you.

Importantly, if your passport was still valid when it was lost or stolen, you must also present a signed and stamped original police report.

Between September and March, your new passport will be ready for collection after 4 working days and will cost you €70.

Between April and August, your new passport will also be ready for collection after 4 working days but will cost you €80.

If you’ll need your new passport urgently, the process can be completed within 4 hours but will cost you €140.

If the lost or stolen passport was still valid, then you’ll also need to pay an additional €11.
