With all Maltese ID cards expiring after 10 years, enough time passes between one renewal and the next to forget what’s needed when going through the process. There are a few scenarios that would require you to apply for a renewal, which we’ve broken down below.
All ID card renewals are handled by Identita in Msida, and you can download and fill in the necessary forms in advance directly from their website. However, you will always need to go to the Identity Cards Unit in person, since each card application or renewal requires your biometric information - facial image, signature, and fingerprints. You can book an appointment through their online portal, with the requirements varying slightly depending on the reason for your application, as we’ve outlined here.

Name Change
If you’ve changed your name or surname, the requirements are almost the same as above - you’ll need to submit a completed Form ID10a and have your current ID card with you. The only difference is that before you can apply for your new ID card, any change to your name or surname needs to have gone through the Public Registry.

Address Change
If you’ve changed your residential address, you will also need to submit a completed Form ID10a with the details of your updated address. Besides the form, you will also need to show a utility bill, bank statement, or PINs letter, together with the contract of the lease or purchase of the property, as proof of residence.

Lost or Stolen ID Card
If you lose your ID card or have it stolen - in Malta or abroad - the first thing you need to do is file a police report. Once that’s been done, fill in a Form ID10a to apply for a new card. Until your new ID card is ready, you will be given a Form ID9 (this is given to you in person and is not available online for download) that will serve as your temporary card. This will then need to be returned upon collecting your new ID card. It’s important to note that if you end up finding the card that you reported as lost or stolen, you will need to hand it in to either a police station or to the Identity Cards Unit.
